Aikido is a martial art developed in Japan during the 1920s by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969), known to students as O Sensei (Great Teacher). He was an expert who reached the highest level of mastery in the classical Japanese Martial Arts. Aikido is performed by blending with the motion and energy of an attacker, redirecting the force of the attack rather than opposing it head-on. The skill sets developed in Aikido are helpful in many different applications, not just self defense. O Sensei envisioned Aikido as a way of life.
WE ARE ALAMO AREA AIKIKAI
At Alamo Area Aikikai, we feel that Aikido is for everyone. We believe in high quality Aikido instruction in a safe and inclusive environment. As members, students can invest in a traditional martial practice that offers a non-violent form of conflict resolution. While the focus is traditional Aikido instruction, we also provide workshops and classes designed for specific populations, including lower impact and adaptive classes for people with disabilities. We include skill building to maintain functional fitness, including injury prevention from falls and conditioning to improve overall mobility. Our instructors are certified with the United States Aikido Federation (USAF). All kyu rank acquired is via the USAF and is only recognized by the USAF. Dan ranks are registered at Aikido World Headquarters, Hombu Dojo in Tokyo, Japan. Instructors and students are encouraged to continue enriching their own practice and skill sets by attending regional seminars and camps, especially those led by USAF Technical Commitee Shihan or other USAF Instructors. All affiliations are welcome for regular practice and seminar attendance but promotions are subject to review by USAF standards.

Our goals include providing quality Aikido instruction in a safe and inclusive environment. and keep it accessible for folks with adaptive needs, whether physical, developmental or financial. We aim to provide a space that allows students and their families and friends to gather together for enrichment through the cultural exchange of this unique martial art.
Our Team.
Our instructors are certified with the United States Aikido Federation and have collectively taught hundreds of students in varying platforms and venues since 2015. We aim to build and maintain an inclusive, diverse, and supportive community with a focus on personal growth experiences. While Aikido is noncompetitive, we believe in fostering all levels of rigor and quality of practice. Some classes are designated for the higher levels of training, just as some are designed with a more fragile population in mind. We believe the practice of Aikido should be accessible to everyone.
